Enabling the next generation of Mobile TV services
Interest in mobile television is growing rapidly. Broadcasters and content providers are increasingly deploying mobile TV as a new source of revenue and to target a population with new consumption habits, such as spending less and less time in front of the family TV.
For telecom operators, the opportunity lies in increasing the average revenue per user or, at the very least, to offset the decrease in voice and data revenue and reduce churn.
Mobile TV, with its mass market appeal, has the potential to achieve both of these objectives.
New mobile broadcast technologies such as, DVB-H, DVB-SH, MBMS, TDTv, complement the 3G TV services by providing a “low cost” infrastructure to broadcast a set of TV channels to the mass-audience.
For service providers, broadcasters and mobile operators, protection against piracy is a necessity to enable them to collect pay-TV subscription fees.
Viaccess mobile conditional access solution (CAS) addresses this need on a wide range of mobile devices.
Viaccess content protection solutions for LiveTV broadcast : Ready today, secure for tomorrow
Using its 15 years experience in the pay-TV segment, where it has developed and deployed robust and scalable conditional access solutions, Viaccess is bringing to the market its ready to deploy mobile CAS solution.
Addressing the widest portfolio of connected and unconnected devices
The mobile CAS solution has been specially designed to address the specific requirements of the mobile TV broadcast environment. One of the main criteria is that the technology supports the widest handset portfolio so that more consumers may be attracted to the service.
The OMA standards body, through the specification of the OMA BCAST Smartcard profile, meets these requirements. The technology in the handset is fully standardised, while the critical security elements are processed in the SIM card.
Viaccess’ solution can be ported on secure SD cards or smartcards in SIM format so that it can be used on portable other than a mobile phone. In such cases, the device will need to be connected to the internet via a PC or other method to automatically receive the TV access rights for the new billing period.
Ready to deploy end to end solutions
In order to facilitate the deployment of such a solution, Viaccess has been working with all the key companies involved in the technical mobile TV chain: encoders, IP encapsulators, service platforms and electronic service guides.
The Viaccess solution is now fully integrated within a large ecosystem of partners, giving operators a choice of different technology providers while maintaining a very good time-to-market for the launch of a live TV broadcast service.
End-to-end security in a multi-sourced environment
To guarantee the highest level of security, Viaccess’ broadcast content protection solutions are based on a mix of software and hardware security mechanisms provided by a smartcard processor embedded either in SIM cards, or in advanced SD cards. In case of piracy, the Viaccess security extension embedded on the SIM cards allows Viaccess to broadcast efficient security counter-measures.
These can be deployed through fully compliant OMA BCAST handsets and resolve the issue of providing end-to-end security in a multi-sourced environment.
