The home network
As the competition across the digital TV is increasing, offering a multi-screens TV offer with the home is now a “must have”. Initially multi-TV offer was provided through the supply by the operator of several STB. Such an offer is very expensive, where an increasing number of retail devices have an IP connection (Connected TVs, Tablets, Blue-Ray disc, Game consoles, PC).
Home networking solutions, where a Master STB allows the operators to push some services to connected devices within the home, offer the best compromise in term of cost of the device and cost of bandwidth.
Stake holders’ expectations for such a service?
- For Operators providing a consistent user experience across all devices is key. This allows them to leverage their brand, to minimize calls to support center and to increase consumption of the service and the overall satisfaction.
- Subscribers are expecting to access live programming (SD and HD) from any screen in the home. Not only that, they want to record and playback programming from any TV in the home. They want to access personal media content (i.e. Videos and photos) from any screen in the home or on the go.
- Manufacturers of the retail devices want to leverage on standards in order to be able to address the global market with limited R&D efforts.
- Content owners are expecting that the content will remain protected when streamed from one device to another
